This large Canadian garden was full of challenges with multiple level changes and a need for it to ‘work hard’ being a low maintenance sustainable garden for a growing family, to have the ability to host large parties and a place to bring clients to see the carbon neutral house. The garden also needed to look good all year round in a challenging climate with icy cold winters.
A sprawling multifunctional space was designed including an orchard, large areas of wildflower meadow and a natural pond to increase biodiversity, multiple areas to entertain and cook outside and a number of different routes to the beach for summer activities. The drive to the beach was re-imagined arching around the property creating new vista’s and reveals on the way to the beach and the stunning river. Planting was made up of mainly native plants and designed to work throughout the seasons with plenty of evergreen interest whilst also abundant use of colour throughout spring and summer. Locally sourced western red Cedar was used throughout the site as decking connecting the garden to it’s place.
